Bhubaneswar: “Students should try to understand the current geo-political situation in the world, on the boil in several hot spots with the shadow of a third world war looming large and think of solutions,” said Chairman of the Odisha Human Rights Commission, Justice Birakishore Mishra on Friday.
He also said the tension between US and North Korea has been causing concern while the problems of the Middle East have been hanging fire since long. The issue of refugees has emerged as a huge case for friction between nations, he said, while addressing the inaugural function of the second edition of SOA Model United Nations (SOAMUN-2018) at the SOA (Deemed to be University) here.
“The UN has been making efforts to find solutions to myriad problems, but the students must understand the world situation and think of solutions to these issues,” said Justice Mishra.
More than 300 students from all over the country including two from Indonesia attended the three-day event.
SOA VC Prof Amit Banerjee called upon the student community to prepare to take leadership at the national and international level. The current world situation should be discussed at SOAMUN-2018, he said.
Senior Professor cum Advisor and Dean Prof Jayadev Pati and Convenor of SOAMUN-2018, Dr Jyoti Ranjan Das also addressed the gathering.
The Model United Nations, known as MUN, is an extra-curricular activity in which students typically play the role of delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees. It helps students to become active, more concerned global citizens and inculcates in them confidence, leadership and diplomatic skills.
The participants have been split into four committees to debate different topics like, Prevention of Arms Race in Outer Space, Promotion and Protection of Rights of Indigenous Population, Global Strategy for Women’s Children’s and Adolescent Health (2016-2030): Early Childhood Development and Combating Global Narco-terrorism.
