Bhubaneswar: The Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital and SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) recently convinced family members of a brain dead female patient to donate her kidneys and liver, thus giving new lives to critical patients.
Sanjukta Patra, a 50-year-old woman, was admitted to IMS and SUM Hospital on April 12 after suffering a brain stroke.
Doctors performed an emergency surgery, but she did not recover and was subsequently declared as brain dead.
Hospital authorities then counselled family members about donating her organs, which could help other critical patients elsewhere to live.
Once the family agreed, hospital authorities got in touch with the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) for necessary action.
Her two kidneys and liver were harvested and sent to hospitals where patients were awaiting transplantation.
One of her kidneys was transported to SUM Ultimate Medicare for transplantation, and the other kidney was taken to Cuttack’s SCB Medical College Hospital for another waiting patient.
Her liver was sent to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar for transplantation.
Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan thanked family members of the deceased for their noble act of donating the deceased’s organs.
IMS and SUM hospital has been actively involved in promotion of organ donation, continuously encouraging family members of brain dead patients to donate body parts.
