SUM Surgeons In Bhubaneswar Restore Severed Finger Of 9-Year-Old Boy

Bhubaneswar: The severed finger of a nine-year-old boy was successfully restored recently by a team of surgeons at Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here.

Ritish Kumar Behera’s index finger got jammed while he was trying to close an iron gate at his Dampara home, in Cuttack district. The finger was completely severed from his hand.

Ritish’s father Ram Chandra Behera rushed him for treatment, but visits to several private hospitals proved futile as they couldn’t do anything. He then went to the Burns, Plastic and Cosmetic surgery department of IMS and SUM Hospital, the faculty of medicine of the SOA Deemed to be University, where Dr Sushanta Kumar Mishra took up the challenge.

He decided to go for microsurgery to restore the severed finger.

A five-member team of surgeons, led by Dr Mishra, performed microsurgery successfully to put the finger back on the child’s palm.

Dr Mishra said that the boy will be able to move the finger normally within a few days.
