Balasore: India on Monday successfully test-fired the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from the launch pad no-3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-Sea in Odisha’s Balasore district.

The test-fire was carried out at 10.39 am.

The missile has a flight range of 290 km with a supersonic speed of about Mach 3 which ensures lower dispersion of target, quicker engagement time and non-interception by any known weapon system in the world.

The missile has the identical configuration for land, sea and sub-sea platforms and uses a transport launch canister for transportation, storage and launch.

The Indian Army has already inducted three regiments of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.

BrahMos, derived from Russian P-800 Oniks or Yakhont missile, is a joint product of India and Russia.

The range of the BrahMos is now in the process of being extended up to 450 km following India’s entry into the Missile Technology Control Regime last year.
