Surjya Patro Unwell, Resigns As Odisha Assembly Speaker

Bhubaneswar: Surjya Narayan Patro resigned has resigned as Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, his son Biplab Patro informed on Saturday.

“My father is suffering from serious kidney ailments and a serious bacterial infection in his left eye. He has been undergoing treatment at Sum Ultimate hospital since the last 14 days,” he said.

In view of his illness, he has resigned from the Speaker post and declined to take any further assignments of the government, he added.

Biplab further informed that Patro has lost vision in his left eye because of the bacterial infection. “We will go for surgery after a few months just to check if he can get his vision back,” he said.

This came amid reports that Bikram Arukh is likely to become the Speaker with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik recasting his ministry with an eye on the 2024 elections.
