Chennai/Bhubaneswar: A man suspected to have been infected with rabies allegedly slit his own throat while undergoing treatment at Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Ramachandar (35), a native of Odisha. He was admitted to the hospital the same morning and reportedly exhibited aggressive and uncontrollable behaviour, the hallmark symptoms of late-stage rabies.
“According to doctors, the patient had the signs and symptoms of rabies. Even after he was sedated, his behaviour was aggressive and uncontrollable. We had informed the fire and rescue team to get the situation under control. Meanwhile, he died by suicide,” TOI reported, quoting CMCH dean A Nirmala.
The incident was captured on video and has since gone viral on social media.
She, however, said that they suspect that the patient was mentally deranged since such extreme rabies cases have not been reported in recent years.
The report further stated that the hospital authorities have kept the body in isolation at the mortuary and informed his relatives. “Once they claim the body, an autopsy will be carried out by Wednesday to ascertain the reason for his violent behaviour,” she added.
