Mumbai: Actor Swara Bhasker’s husband Fahad Ahmad will be contesting in next month’s Maharashtra Assembly elections.
Social activist Fahad, who had joined Samajwadi Party (SP) in 2022 and became its Maharashtra unit president, has quit the Akhilesh Yadav-led party and joined Sharad Pawar faction of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SCP).
He has been given a ticket for the Anushakti Nagar seat. It will be a high-profile contest as Fahad’s fight will be against NCP (Ajit Pawar) candidate Sana Malik, the daughter of senior party leader Nawab Malik.
“Fahad Ahmad is a well-educated young Muslim youth and has worked as an activist across the country. People want us to give a chance to such leaders. He was in the Samajwadi Party earlier but we had talks with SP and he came to our party. We gave him a ticket from our party from the Anushakti Nagar constituency,” NCP-SCP leader Jayant Patil.
Swara, also an activist, married Fahad in February 2023. The couple was blessed with a daughter in September that year.
Maharashtra will vote to elect 288 MLAs in a single phase on November 20, with results to be announced on November 23, along with Jharkhand Assembly polls and other byelections across the country.
