Tata Steel Foundation Enables Odisha Youth To Raise Awareness Against Alcoholism Through ‘Nukkad Nataks’

Bhubaneswar: Gobinda Gaipai, 24, from Mirigichara in Gobarghati Panchayat, Sukinda block, Jajpur district, has dedicated himself to igniting social change through the powerful medium of ‘Nukkad Natak.’ His journey began with a personal tragedy, the loss of his brother to alcohol abuse. He was determined to prevent others from suffering a similar fate.

While Gobinda’s family sustained itself through goat farming and agriculture, his education was supported by Tata Steel Foundation’s Jyoti fellowship, which noticed his passion for cultural performances and role-plays and encouraged him to raise awareness against alcoholism in the community.

Gobinda assembled a team of 10 individuals and embarked on a mission to educate and raise awareness through ‘Nukkad Natak’ performances. The effort has reached over 150 panchayats in Odisha, making a meaningful impact on the lives of many.

Speaking about the initiative, Gobinda said, “Through ‘Nukkad Natak,’ I strive to reach out to as many souls as possible. If only someone had reached out to my brother, I wouldn’t be mourning today.”

Gobinda currently earns more than Rs 3 lakh from his ‘Nukkad Natak’ performances. He earns another Rs 2 lakh through new farming techniques, procured with the Foundation’s help.
