New Delhi: Almost two years after being arrested by Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the multi-crore teacher recruitment scam in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Manik Bhattacharya was on Thursday granted bail by Calcutta High Court.

Granting bail, Justice Suvra Ghosh imposed certain conditions such as Bhattacharya — who was taken into custody on October 10, 2022 — will submit his passport to the lower court and not leave station without permission from investigating officers.

Bhattacharya, who was chairman of West Bengal Board of Primary Education, is an MLA from Palashipara in Nadia district.

He was the second TMC legislator, after state Education minister Partha Chatterjee, to be arrested. Chatterjee is still in prison.

Besides the ED, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is also probing teachers’ recruitment scams in West Bengal.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court, which was due to hear the West Bengal government’s plea challenging a Calcutta High Court decision invalidating the appointment of 25,753 teachers and non-teaching staff in state government and aided schools on September 10, could not take up the matter due to some other important matters.

The case will be heard on September 24.
