London: Tennis legend Boris Becker was on Friday jailed for two-and-a-half years as a British court found him guilty of charges relating to his 2017 bankruptcy.
Sentenced under the Insolvency Act, the six-time Grand Slam champion will serve half of the prison term.
Becker was ruled to have hidden millions of pounds’ worth of assets after being made bankrupt in June 2017, reported BBC.
Judge Deborah Taylor, who sentenced Becker, said: “I take into account what has been described as your ‘fall from grace’. You have lost your career and reputation and all of your property as a result of your bankruptcy.”
She added: “You have not shown remorse, acceptance of your guilt and have sought to distance yourself from your offending and your bankruptcy. While I accept your humiliation as part of the proceedings, there has been no humility.”
Becker, who in 1985 became the youngest men’s Wimbledon champion at the age of 17, was found guilty of four charges but acquitted of a further 20 counts relating to the 2017 bankruptcy case. He had faced a maximum prison sentence of seven years, reported BBC.
In 2002, a German court handed Becker a two-year suspended sentence for tax evasion and attempted tax evasion worth about £1.4m.
