Mumbai: Rafael Nadal on Thursday announced his retirement from the sport. One of the all-time greats of the tennis world, 38-year-old Nadal captured 22 Grand Slam titles, 14 playing on clay courts at the French Open. Nadal shared the news through a video on social media.
The Spanish legend was known for his grit and tenacity on the tennis courts. In November, he will play for Spain at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga. Nadal was included in the Spanish team after he recovered from an injury that kept him out of the group matches. Spain will face the Netherlands in the Davis Cup quarterfinals between November 19 and 20.
During the Davis Cup tournament in 2004, Nadal, playing from Spain, rose to prominence. Appearing in the same tournament to end his spectacular career has some symbolic significance.
