Balasore: Tensions erupted in Odisha’s Soro area on Sunday night following a heated exchange between IIC Sudipta Sahu and some youths, who allegedly obstructed a road stretch by putting up a LED screen near Court Square to watch the Asia Cup final match between India and Pakistan.
According to sources, the police officer came across the obstruction while patrolling and directed them to clear the stretch. The situation escalated when one among the youths slapped the ICC, following which police beat him up and took him into custody. It is alleged that the condition of the youth deteriorated and he was later shifted to the district headquarters hospital.
Meanwhile, police raided the homes of four more youths for attacking the IIC and detained them. This led to an outrage among the locals, who then gheraoed the Soro police station, protesting against alleged police brutality and demanding immediate release of the detainees.
The gates of the police station were closed and additional forces deployed to manage the crowd, the sources added.
