Tension Over ‘Custodial Death’ Of Youth In Sundargarh Dist
Rourkela: Tension prevailed at Rajgangpur in Sundargarh district on Thursday after a youth allegedly committed suicide in police custody the previous night.
He was found hanging inside the toilet of Rajgangpur police station at around 8 pm.
The deceased was identified as Jai Lakra (30) of Raika Kachhar village in the district. He was working as a bank agent and was arrested two days ago on charges of for duping several persons.
Lakra had allegedly swindled around Rs 10 lakh on the pretext of making deposits in the bank.
Following his death, Lakra’s family members and locals alleged police atrocity.
Meanwhile, the body has been sent to Rajgangpur hospital and the postmortem will be conducted in the presence of a magistrate.
DIG (western range) Kavita Jalan told the media that the investigation would be done in accordance with the NHRC guidelines.
“The investigation is on. We will initiate further action on the basis of the postmortem report,” she added.
To maintain law and order, 20 platoons of police forces have been deployed in front of the police station as well as at different parts of town.
