Supreme Court Stays Implementation Of Farm Laws, Slams Centre

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Central government to stay the implementation of the three controversial farm laws that are at the core of massive farmer protests, saying the situation has gone worse.

The directive was issued by a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde while hearing a bunch of petitions challenging the farm laws and the farmer agitation at the Delhi borders.

“Each one of us will be responsible if anything goes wrong. We don’t want any injuries or blood on our hands,” the CJI said.

The court further said it will constitute a committee comprising experts including from ICAR.

“Let those farmer unions who say it is progressive say that before the committee. But you have to tell us whether you stay the farm acts or we do it. Keep it in abeyance. What is the issue? We are not in favour of easily staying a law but we want to say don’t implement the law,” the CHI said in sharp remarks aimed at the Centre.

He further said that all can give response to the proposed committee, both for and against. “And we will accept the committee and deal with the farm laws,” the CJI said.

The top court suggested that after the implementation of the laws was stayed, the protest could continue. “But decide whether you want to carry on the protest on the same site or move to other,” it told the agitating farmers.
