‘There Was No Trauma,’ Says Kiran Rao On Divorce With Aamir Khan
New Delhi: Aamir Khan’s second wife, Kiran Rao, has never spoken about her divorce with her famous husband. However, in a recent interview, the filmmaker talked about making a film about marriage – Laapataa Ladies when her own relationship with Aamir was falling apart. The couple tied the knot in 2005 and parted ways in 2021. They also have a son, Azad.
Speaking to Film Companion, Kiran Rao called Aamir Khan a ‘great support’ and shared that she would not have been able to finish it without her former husband’s help. “He’s been such a great support. We wouldn’t have this film without it, because he found the script, and he offered it to me to direct, which was incredibly fortuitous for me,” she was quoted as saying.
Kiran Rao further clarified that she never had any trauma in any of her relationships. “A lot of the issues we’ve tackled (in the film), in some way, we’ve all experienced. I’ve been very fortunate because all my relationships have never had trauma. I’ve had very loving relationships in my life, and continue to have them. The idea was to show how, within the constructs of marriage, within socially-normative relationships, you can still find your freedom, you can still find who you are, and you can reach for something that fulfils your potential, and I’ve experienced that myself,” she added.
Kiran also shared that she shares a ‘wonderful relationship’ with Aamir Khan and mentioned that he always supports her. “I continue to have a wonderful relationship with my producer and ex-husband. I continue to be supported by both my family and Aamir’s, so I feel that it’s all possible, and this film wants to convey that, and not make you throw out the baby with the bathwater. Society and relationships are very important to both… to all of us,” she said.
