Bhubaneswar: IAS officers Manju Sheoran Jakhar and SM Thiyagrajan and IPS officer Anil Kumar are MBBS who later cleared the civil services.

Now in this crisis caused by the second wave of COVID-19, besides performing their duties in administration, they are also donning the hats of medical practitioners to help doctors treating COVID-19 patients.

A 2016 batch IAS officer, Jakhar is serving as the chief executive officer of the Udaipur District Council and supervises rural development work under the MNREGA.

Before joining the Civil Services, Jakhar studied MBBS in New Delhi’s Lady Hardinge Medical College and also completed her MS in gynaecology. Given her medical background, she has been assigned to ensure oxygen supply to patients and to bridge the gap in COVID testing facilities.

Despite her almost daily rounds of hospitals to ensure this, she also check patients in the RNT Medical College Hospital in Udaipur.

“A lot of treatment is done on the phone itself as every family has someone or other suffering from Covid. I check their reports, symptoms and track their treatment. This will continue as I am doctor,” she was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express.

“Our report told us that some of the hospitals had a per capita consumption of four cylinders daily, which is now reduced to two. With the same oxygen we are able to treat 200- 300 more patients without affecting the treatment quality,” Jakhar added.

Both Nilesh Deore and Thiyagrajan are 2011 IAS officers from Bihar. Deore is serving as the district magistrate of Saran, Thiyagrajan is DM of Darbhanga. Deore studied MBBS from the Terna Medical College and Hospital in Navi Mumbai.

“I never forgot that I am a doctor. Wherever I come across sick persons on inspection at hospitals and dedicated Covid care centres, I go through their prescription and offer advice,” Deore said.

Thiyagrajan completed his MBBS in 2008 from the Coimbatore Medical College and later joined the Civil Services. “My background has helped me in making arrangements. I advise doctors on usage of drugs, steroids and other lifesaving medicines,” Thiyagarajan was quoted as saying by TNIE.
