Paralakhemundi: Normally the hot iron box used for pressing clothes are used with burning coal or electricity. But a laundry man in Paralakhemundi town of Gajapati district has been using the LPG cooking gas for the purpose with his innovative skills.
Prasad, a laundryman, who ekes out his living by ironing the clothes of the people, uses the LPG in his iron box.
Asked how this novel idea struck him, Prasad, the laundryman said he was earlier using hot coal in the iron box to press the clothes. But the earning was not enough due to acute shortage of coal. Besides, using the electric iron was costly as the power bill was too high.
“I thought of using the LPG to iron the clothes. After several attempts, I finally succeeded in making minor modifications to the box so that it can function with cooking gas,” he said.
Asked whether using the LPG has benefitted him, Prasad said he is now able to earn more profit.
“Presently, I use a 5-kg LPG cylinder. With one kg of LPG, I am able to iron the clothes for 20 hours. Going by the volume of the clothes I iron every day, one cylinder lasts for 15 days with a little over six hours of ironing every day,” Prasad added.
