Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Wednesday arrested three persons in connection with the brutal murder of one Amaresh Naik near Sunderpada under Airfield Police limits here on Diwali night (October 27).
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Anup Kumar Sahoo identified the accused as Sankar Bastia (24) of Old Town area, Jagdish Jagendra (22) of Kapila Prasad and Jitendra Mallick (21) of Sunderpada.
He said that police had videographed statement of two eyewitness during investigation and they had identified as many as 10 persons allegedly involved in the crime.
“These three are among the names revealed by them, and evidence suggest their involvement in the murder,” he said.
“The investigation revealed that two groups were having a feast on the Diwali night. There was a heated argument over bursting of crackers between them. The accused persons later reached the spot on receiving a phone call. Sankar Bastia had a quarrel with the other group members and soon others joined him in assaulting the victim resulting in his death,” the DCP revealed.
Police had seized a wooden plank from the spot and this could be the weapon of murder, he said, adding that things would become clear after they receive the postmortem report.
Efforts are on to nab the other accused, he said, while attributed the incident to a dispute between two groups.
