Cuttack: The Odisha Olympic Association (OOA) on Sunday announced cash awards for athletes from the state who win medals in the forthcoming Tokyo Olympics.
The OOA announced cash award of Rs 5 lakh for gold medal winner, Rs 3 lakh for silver medal winner and Rs 1 lakh for bronze medal winner in any discipline of the summer or para Olympics.
A total of six sportspersons from Odisha – Dutee Chand (track and field), Amit Rohidas, Birendra Lakra, Deep Grace Ekka and Namita Toppo (hockey) – have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics scheduled from July 23 to August 8. Para-shuttler Pramod Bhagat (men’s singles) will take part in the Paralympics at Tokyo from August 24 to September 5.
Earlier, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced cash award of Rs 15 lakh for each of the athletes who have been selected to participate in the Olympics. Besides, he has declared cash award of Rs 6 crore, Rs 4 crore and Rs 2.5 crore for Odisha athletes who win gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.
