New Delhi: ‘Top Gun’, the film that made Tom Cruise a global star, is set for re-release in India to mark its 40th anniversary.
The makers announced that the iconic movie as well as its sequel ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ will return to theatres for a special one-week run, from May 15.
Released in 1986, ‘Top Gun’ became a cultural phenomenon with its high-octane aerial combat scenes and portrayal of elite US Navy pilots training at the Fighter Weapons School, known as Top Gun.
The film followed a group of skilled pilots competing to prove they are the best, with Cruise playing the daring Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell.
Its massive success played a key role in establishing Cruise as a top box-office star in the 1980s.
Directed by Tony Scott, the film also featured Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Kelly McGillis, Meg Ryan, and Tom Skerritt in key roles.
Cruise reprised his role as Maverick 36 years later in Top Gun: Maverick. In the sequel, Maverick returns to train a new batch of pilots for a dangerous, high-stakes mission. Among them is Lt Bradley Bradshaw, played by Miles Teller, the son of Maverick’s late friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the sequel also starred Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris and Val Kilmer.
‘Top Gun: Maverick’ was a massive global hit, earning over $1.5 billion at the box office and becoming the highest-grossing film in Paramount Pictures’ history.
A third instalment of the franchise has been announced, with Cruise expected to return.
