Top Endoscopic Ultrasound Expert Trains Doctors in City

Bhubaneswar: A group of doctors, hailing from across the country, is being trained in the latest Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) technology by Dr Shyam Varadarajulu, acknowledged as a leading EUS expert of the world, at the IMS and SUM Hospital here since Monday.
The four-day advanced EUS workshop is being organized by the department of gastroenterology of IMS and SUM Hospital.
Hospital sources said EUS or Endo-ultrasonography is a medical procedure in which endosonocopy (insertion of a probe into a hollow organ) is combined with high resolution ultrasound to obtain images of the internal organs in the chest, abdomen and colon, much better than CT and MRI. Diseases deep inside the chest and abdomen are diagnosed very accurately by this technology. Tissue sample or biopsy obtained from deep structures very safely leading to correct diagnosis of cancers and other diseases. It helps staging different cancers for proper treatment.
The greatest advantage of this advanced technology is to perform different blood less surgeries inside the chest and abdomen extremely safely and patients are discharged the same day. It helps to provide palliative treatment for very advanced cancers, thus improving the quality of life. This technology is one of the great discovery in the field of intervention Gastroenterology, extremely accurate in diagnosing and treating diseases.

Dr Varadarajulu, an Indian-American, is the Medical Director for Interventional Endoscopy at the Florida Hospital, Orlando, USA and is invited around the world to train doctors in the advanced technology. He is also Professor of Medicine at the University of Central Florida.
“Now with EUS we can actually see the root cause of diseases and hence treatment is much more accurate,” Dr Varadarajulu said, adding experts were looking to develop Endoscopic ET scans and MRI scans too. The reason is, EUS is very accurate and specific,” he said.
“We are extremely fortunate to have Dr Varadarajulu with us at Bhubaneswar for this workshop. I was trained by him and it is a great opportunity for others to learn from such a stalwart expert,” said head of Gastroenterology at IMS and SUM Hospital Dr Manoj Kumar Sahu.
