Bhubaneswar: Cases of torture against women are on the increase in Odisha. Quoting data collected by the State Women Commission, Women and Child Development Minister Prafulla Samal, told the Assmebly on Friday that 27,723 such cases have been registered in the last nine years.
Khurda, Cuttack and Puri top the list. Khurda accounts for the largest number with 5,277 cases between 2010 and 2018. Cuttack registered 2,608 cases, while 2,157 cases were registered in Puri in the same period. At 87, the least number of cases were registered in Malkangiri district. According to the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, there is a government appointed protection officer in every district. Likewise, local grievance cells have been opened in every district to check the exploitation of girls at work places.
Besides, ‘Sakhi Kendras’ have been opened in Khurda, Sambalpur, Ganjam, Sundargarh and Koraput districts to help women.
