Bhubaneswar: A special team of officials from Odisha has left for Sikkim, where a tourist vehicle plunged nearly 1,000 feet into the Teesta River along Chungthang-Munsithang route last night.
One person has reportedly died while eight are missing.
Initial reports indicate that multiple passengers from Odisha were on the bus involved in the accident. Among those missing is Itishree Jena, a BJP leader from Jajpur Road. She was reportedly travelling with her family when the tragic accident occurred.
Upon learning this, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi engaged with Sikkim authorities to coordinate rescue and relief operations. He promptly instructed a team of Odisha officials to travel to Sikkim to supervise and assist in the rescue efforts. The team will also ensure that injured passengers receive proper medical care and facilitate their safe return to the state, according to the Chief Minister’s Office.

The vehicle was carrying 11 people, including 10 tourists and a driver. The Indian Army, ITBP, Sikkim Police and local volunteers have launched a rescue operation. Two critically injured passengers have been airlifted to Gangtok and efforts are on to rescue remaining individuals, the IANS reported.
Mangan SP Sonam Dechu Bhutia confirmed that one body has been recovered and two survivors have been rescued.
