Berhampur: In order to promote safety awareness among its consumers, Tata Power Southern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPSODL) has planned to organise more than 140 Nukkad Nataks (street plays) in its area of operation during this financial year.
The company has already hosted 61 Nukkad Nataks from January to May, reaching across to around 25,000 individuals in 61 villages. It launched the initiative last year.
The Nukkad Nataks, organised in collaboration with local authorities and community members, have made significant contribution towards raising awareness on the issues such as employee and animal safety, energy conservation and prevention of electricity theft. The initiative also involves local village communities and Women’s Self-Help Groups (WSHG) and NGOs.
The key themes covered by TPSODL in the Nukkad Nataks included the importance of consumer and public safety, including prevention of unauthorised hooking and construction, animal poaching, domestic electrical safety, digital payments, energy conservation, safety observation reporting, and the use of 1912 call centre number.
Besides, keeping electrical equipment away from water, childproofing outlets, securing cords and outlets, using plastic guards, regularly checking for frayed wires and loose connections, and maintaining electrical appliance safety are also covered in the street plays.
As of May, 61 Nukkad Nataks have been completed in Koraput and Ganjam districts. The remaining 79 plays are scheduled across all TPSODL sections, particularly targeting villages and locations prone to unauthorised hooking and construction.

This year, we are expanding our Nukkad Nataks to over 140, deepening our engagement across our service areas to not only enhance safety awareness but also empower and unite the communities we serve,” said Amit Kumar Garg, CEO of TPSODL.
In forested areas such as Bhanjanagar, Kandhamal, Malkangiri, Koraput and Boudh, the company has emphasised on animal safety theme for Nukkad Natak. The company completed more than 100 Nukkad Nataks last year.
