Buxar: Tragedy unfolded at a wedding ceremony in Buxar, Bihar, after the bride was shot in the abdomen by a man known to the family. She is now fighting for her life at a hospital in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night when Aarti Kumari was seated on a dais with her groom at the venue. They were surrounded by relatives and guests.
A young girl, believed to be Aarti’s sister, was performing a ritual by applying vermillion on the grooms forehead and then turned towards Aarti to do the same. At that moment, a man standing among the guests in front of the dais allegedly whipped out a firearm and shot the bride, as reported by Zee News.
The celebration turned into chaos, with many guests attempting to get away and others rushing towards the dais to rescue Aarti.
The shooter, identified as Deenbandhu, a neighbour, took advantage of the confusion and fled.
The bullet struck Aarti in the abdomen, near her navel. She was rushed to the Sadar Hospital in Buxar where doctors provided initial treatment before referring her to the Trauma Centre in Varanasi due to her condition. She remains critical.
The police said the firing took place around 11 pm. Preliminary suspicion points towards a one-sided love affair. While Deenbandhu remains at large, his parents have been detained for questioning.
Chandan Kumar, additional station house officer, said that the accused had previously been jailed in a liquor-related case. Police teams are conducting raids to apprehend him.
The wedding procession that had arrived from the Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh returned shortly after the shooting.
