New Delhi: The Tripura Students Forum Delhi (TSFD) has asked the Delhi Police to register an FIR and investigate allegations that a youth from Tripura was sexually assaulted, racially abused and humiliated in a video shared on Instagram, ANI reported.
The complaint was sent to the Joint Commissioner of Police heading the Delhi Police’s Special Police Unit for North Eastern Region (SPUNER).
The forum alleged that the video showed a person from Tripura being sexually abused, harassed and publicly humiliated by a content creator. It said the video was shared from the Instagram account @amirshokeen, which it claimed was linked to a person named Amir Shokeen.
The organisation also objected to the alleged use of racially offensive words such as “Chinki” and “Chiness” against the youth.
“Such expressions, when used to demean or humiliate a person on account of their perceived ethnic or regional identity, raise serious concerns about racial prejudice, dignity and equal treatment,” the complaint stated.
The forum further said that a derogatory remark was made about Tripura.
“By referring to Tripura in such a demeaning manner, the alleged conduct has caused anguish among members of the Tripura community and is perceived as an affront to the honourable name, dignity, reputation and prestige of our State,” the forum added.
The TSFD urged the police to register an FIR and conduct a fair probe into the alleged assault and racial abuse. It also asked them to identify the person operating the Instagram account and others involved in recording or facilitating the incident.
The forum sought that the alleged victim be contacted safely and confidentially, and that his statement be recorded sensitively. It also asked the police to preserve the original video, metadata and upload history as evidence.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned the incident and said the accused would face strict legal action. In a post on X, he said the Delhi Police and Tripura Police were coordinating on the matter.
“This evil man will be punished. There was a delay in lodging the official complaint, but Delhi Police and Tripura Police will teach him a hard lesson. People who tolerate such wicked behaviour in society are also responsible for the spread of hatred,” Rijiju posted.
