President Donald Trump has made up his mind on firing the inspector general of the US intelligence community who had handled the whistleblower complaint that triggered his impeachment.
The US President notified Congress on Friday that he planned to remove the official, Michael Atkinson, in 30 days. In a letter to the Senate intelligence committee, Trump wrote: “It is vital that I have the fullest confidence in the appointees serving as inspectors general. This is no longer the case with regard to this inspector general.”
Atkinson was the first to inform Congress about a complaint made by an anonymous whistleblower last year that spoke of how the President exerted pressure on Ukraine to investigate Democrat Joe Biden and his son. It resulted in a House investigation leading to Trump’s impeachment.
Trump was subsequently acquitted in February.
