Washington: The world watched in dismay and disbelief as thousands of Donald Trump supporters stormed the Capitol Hill and lay siege to democracy on Wednesday, demanding that the results of US Presidential elections be overturned.
Viewers in India were glued to their television sets late at night as scenes of the unruly mob – some of whom were armed — clashed with police officials and entered the historic building which is the legislative branch of the US federal government and the seat of United States Congress.
On a day when the Congress was meeting to certify the results of polls held on November 3, the unprecedented attack on democracy left four people dead.
Amid the disturbing visuals of vandalism, damage of property, mayhem and lawlessness, attention of viewers in India was drawn to a group of protesters brandishing Indian flags among the sea of pro-Trump American flags and placards outside the Capitol.
Reports on social media suggested that several Indian-Americans were among active members of the protest, which followed weeks of unsupported claims of a fraudulent election led by Trump himself.
Joe Biden won the election with 306 electoral college votes.
