Tokyo: A powerful earthquake measuring 7.3 on Richter scale hit the coast of Fukushima in northern Japan on Wednesday evening, triggering a tsunami advisory.
Over 2 million homes in Tokyo area were plunged into darkness, AP reported. According to Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake struck 60 km below the sea.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
It’s the same region where a deadly 9.0 earthquake and tsunami had struck in 2011, wreaking widespread devastation and causing a nuclear disaster.
