Tsunami Warning Issued After 7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Philippines

New Delhi: A tsunami warning was issued by the US warning system after a powerful earthquake struck the Philippines on Saturday.

The earthquake, measuring 7.5 on Richter scale, hit Mindanao island in the Philippines, at a depth of 63 km, according to European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami advisory for Japan’s Pacific coastal areas from Miyakojima-Yaeyama region to Chiba Prefecture.

Just over a fortnight ago, another earthquake – of 6.7 magnitude – had hit Mindanao island.

Three deaths were reported from Sarangani, South Cotabato and Davao Occidental provinces, while 13 people were injured following the November 17 quake. More than 50 houses and other buildings were damaged.

The Philippines lies in the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, which is considered to be the ‘most seismically and volcanically active zone in the world’.
