Mumbai: Like hundreds of global Twitter employees, those working in the India office of the Elon Musk-headed social media company have been spending some very tense hours.
As a massive lay-off under the new regime looms, Twitter employees received an email on Friday asking them to return home and wait for an email to land in their inbox. The dreaded mail, which will spell out the status of employees’ job with Twitter, will be sent at 9.30 pm IST.
Following that scary email, most of Twitter India employees were logged out of their official email ids, India Today Tech reported, leaving them in tears as they were thrown into hours of uncertainty.
“We acknowledge this is an incredibly challenging experience to go through, whether or not you are impacted. Thank you for continuing to adhere to Twitter policies that prohibit you from discussing confidential company information on social media, with the press or elsewhere,” mentioned the memo sent to Twitter employees.
According to the India Today report, the email is addressed to ‘Team’ and signed by ‘Twitter’. The name of Musk, who acquired Twitter in a $44 billion deal, doesn’t feature at all.
It’s just been a week that Musk took over Twitter, but a number of changes have already been effected, like firing the company’s top brass including CEO Parag Agrawal and imposing a monthly charge of $8 for the Blue tick with an account.
That he will be laying off employees has been doing the rounds from Day 1, but no details had been forthcoming.
The memo sent to employees earlier today seems to have more or less confirmed that.
It remains to be seen what will be the magnitude of the sackings and how much Twitter India employees are affected.
