Muscat: Two Indian nationals were killed and a third is missing after the vehicle they were travelling in was washed away in flash floods in Oman on Saturday.
While the deaths of Yusuf and Shamla, both natives of Trithala in Kerala have been confirmed, the missing woman has been identified as Ramla. She was from Trithala as well.
A total of four people are suspected to have been killed in the accident, authorities have said, as reported by India Today.
Senior Congress leader from Kerala V D Satheesan has sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in the matter.
Reports say that the victims were travelling in a vehicle when it was caught in a sudden flash flood in Oman’s Al Batinah Governorate.
In his letter, Satheesan requested all possible assistance to ensure the safety of those affected and support to the families of the victims.
The Centre should take immediate steps to coordinate with Omani authorities to expedite and strengthen the ongoing search and rescue operations, especially in view of continuing heavy rains and the persistent flood risk in the region, he said.
“I write to you with deep concern regarding the tragic flash floods that struck Oman on Saturday, resulting in the loss of two lives and leaving one woman from Kerala still missing,” Satheesan said in the letter.
Omani authorities have, meanwhile, warned people to stay away from low-lying areas as flash floods swept across the country due to unexpected rainfall.
Rescue teams are working to provide relief to people affected by the floods, officials said.
