Bengaluru: Amid the outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China over the past few weeks, two infants in Bengaluru had reportedly tested positive for the virus. “The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has detected two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka. Both cases were identified through routine surveillance for multiple respiratory viral pathogens, as part of ICMR’s ongoing efforts to monitor respiratory illnesses across the country,” cites a statement from ICMR.

According to ICMR, a 3-month-old female infant was diagnosed with HMPV after being admitted to Baptist Hospital, Bengaluru with a history of bronchopneumonia. She was later discharge. Another 8-month-old male infant tested positive for HMPV on January 3, after being admitted to Baptist Hospital, Bengaluru, with a history of bronchopneumonia. The infant is now recovering. In both these cases, there is no history of international travel, claims ICMR.

“Union Health Ministry is monitoring the situation through all available surveillance channels. ICMR will continue to track trends in HMPV circulation throughout the year. The World Health Organization (WHO) is already providing timely updates regarding the situation in China to further inform ongoing measures. The recent preparedness drill conducted across the country has shown that India is well-equipped to handle any potential increase in respiratory illnesses and public health interventions can be deployed promptly if needed,” the statement mentioned.

Last week, India had mentioned that there was no reason for alarm. The health ministry was actively monitoring the spread of respiratory illnesses within the country, besides seasonal influenza trends.

China has witnessed a spike in such cases, especially among children and the elderly. The outbreak has triggered comparisons to the early days of Covid-19.

“Viruses like HMPV are already in circulation in India and that existing health infrastructure is capable of managing any potential cases,” the Health Ministry had remarked.

Citizens have been urged to remain calm and follow standard health precautions, including maintaining hygiene and seeking medical advice if symptoms arise.

HMPV causes symptoms similar to common cold, cough, wheezing, runny nose, or sore throat. Young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable as the virus can cause severe respiratory complications.
