Bhubaneswar: A cyclonic circulation lies over Southeast Bay of Bengal & adjoining equatorial Indian ocean off Sumatra Coast. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region around November 9, the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Department tweeted on Saturday.
It is likely to become more marked and move westnorthwestwards towards north Tamil Nadu coast during the subsequent 48 hours, it added.
“NCEP GFS model is indicating likely formation of a depression over southwest BoB and adjoining north Sri Lanka around November 11, its further intensification and movement towards north Tamil Nadu coast during the subsequent 24 hours, followed by weakening,” the IMD said in its earlier bulletin.
The Met Office has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during the next five days; in Kerala & Maharashtra on November 8 and coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on November 8-9.
This is also likely to trigger rain in coastal areas, including Bhubaneswar and Puri, on November 11 and 13.
Notably, the Global Forecast System (GFS) model had predicted that the low pressure, which is likely to form on November 9, will cross the coast of Andhra Pradesh.
The IMD further said that the low-pressure area over Southeast Arabian Sea and the adjoining Lakshadweep area is likely to become a well-marked low-pressure area and concentrate into a depression over the same region during the next 24 hours. Then it is likely to move west-northwestward away from the west coast of India, it added.
