Mumbai: The Shiv Sena faction led by Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday announced that it will support NDA’s Presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu.
The decision comes a day after 16 of the party’s 22 MPs told Thackeray to support her as she is from the tribal community. Nearly 10 per cent of Maharashtra’s population are Scheduled Tribes (STs).
Even West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has softened her stand on Droupadi, who arrived in Kolkata on July 11 to seek the support of lawmakers.
On July 1, Mamata had said that if she was aware of Droupadi’s candidature earlier, things would have been different.
“If we had got suggestions about who their (BJP’s) candidate was, we could have discussed at the all-party meeting…,” she said, adding that Droupadi has higher chances of winning the Presidential polls.
