New Delhi: The UGC has recommended ‘Institute of Eminence’ (IoE) status for Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) here so as to help it become a world-class teaching and research institution.
The recommendation came after the full commission meeting of UGC here on Friday, officials in the Ministry of Human Resource Development said.
KIIT is the only institute from Odisha to figure in the list of 10 public institutes and 10 private institutes in the country, who have been recommended for grant of the IoE status.
In 2016, the Narendra Modi government had announced the IoE scheme to make the 20 identified institutes as world-class institutes and help them be ranked among the best 100 institutes globally.
While the public institutes will receive special funding, to be shared by both the central and state government, the privately-managed institutes will be entitled to more autonomy with special category deemed university status.
The Centre had set up an expert committee under the chairmanship of N Gopalaswami to recommend the institutes for the IoE status. The committee had come up with a list of 30 institutes. Of these institutes, UGC finalised the name of 20 institutes in its Friday meeting.
