London: Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s plan to reopen the economy will involve massive testing for COVID-19 and use of COVID passports.
Everyone will be urged to take coronavirus test twice a week. Kits will be available at local pharmacies and via home delivery services from April 9.
Most of the adult population here have received at least one dose of the vaccine. The government believes that the pandemic can be controlled with rapid testing of the entire population and a COVID passport system.
“Massive efforts have been made by the British public to stop the spread of the virus,” Johnson said in a statement. “As we continue to make good progress on our vaccine programme and with our roadmap to cautiously easing restrictions underway, regular rapid testing is even more important to make sure those efforts are not wasted,” he added.
The UK is on top as far as vaccination programmes in Europe is concerned, with around 31.5 million people given at least a shot.
