New Delhi: With videos and pictures of students braving hostility and bad weather along the borders of embattled Ukraine flooding social media, India on Monday decided to send Union Ministers Hardeep Singh Puri, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Kiren Rijiju and Gen (Retd) VK Singh to its neighbouring countries to coordinate the evacuation mission.
According to government sources, these ministers will be going there as “special envoys” of India.
While Scindia will look after Romania and Moldova. Kiren Rijiju will go to Slovakia, Hardeep Singh Puri to Hungary and Gen (Retd) VK Singh to Poland to manage the evacuation of Indians stuck in Ukraine.
This decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the second in the last 24 hours.
While over 900 Indian nationals, mostly students, have so far been evacuated under ‘Operation Ganga’, nearly 15,000 continue to be stuck in Ukraine. A flight carrying 249 Indian landed in Delhi this morning.
