New Delhi: The Karkardooma court here on Wednesday granted interim bail to former Jawaharlal Nehru University student leader Umar Khalid in a UAPA case, concerning alleged larger conspiracy in the riots in Delhi in February 2020.
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai granted him interim bail for 7 days to attend his cousin’s wedding, from December 28 to January 3.
The interim bail conditions requires him not to contact any witness and any person in connection with the case. He has also been asked not use social media during this period. He will have to stay at his home or the places, where the ceremonies will take place, meet only his family members, relatives and friends, the LiveLaw reported.
This comes five months after Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of Karkardooma Courts dismissed the second regular bail plea filed by him.
Khalid has been languishing in jail since September 2020 without trail or bail, seven months after 53 were killed and over 700 injured in communal clashes. He was suspected to be one of the masterminds of the riots.
Reports further stated that he had requested a 10-day interim bail through his lawyer while mentioning about his cousin’s wedding on January 1 at Masjid Ishaat Islam at Abul Fazal Enclave in New Delhi followed by a nikah and dinner at Kalindi Kunj. He had further stated that the haldi and mehendi functions would be held on December 30 and 31 and mentioned that he would like to meet his relatives, specifically his sister, who is coming from the US. He also submitted that he did not wish to attend the reception at Nagpur and would remain in Delhi.
