Jagatsinghpur: An undertrial prisoner allegedly attempted suicide inside Samagola sub-jail here on Tuesday.
The prisoner identified as Gopinath Swain was brought to the jail four days ago on charges of burning a girl alive.
According to reports, he slit his throat with a sharp object in an attempt to end his life. Other inmates raised an alarm on finding him in a pool of blood and he was rushed to Kujang Medical by the jail staff. He was later admitted to the district headquarters hospital and then shifted to SCB Medical and Hospital in Cuttack when his condition deteriorated.
The reason as to why Swain took the extreme step was not known. The jail authorities are investigating the matter.
