Mumbai: SpiceJet has devised a unique way to honour Sonu Sood for his admirable humanitarian work during the coronavirus-induced lockdown last year. The private airline has unveiled a special livery with a picture of the actor, and accompanying text which reads ‘A salute to the saviour Sonu Sood’, wrapped on its Boeing 737 aircraft.
He is the first Indian actor to be honoured this way.
“To be honest, I am quite taken aback by his huge honour. This is a really sweet and touching gesture on Spice Jet’s part and I am overwhelmed with such a lovely present. I hope that I can keep making everyone proud with my work. I am also thankful to Spice Jet for their effort of bringing back so many Indians from different parts of the world safely to their homeland during the pandemic,” Sood said in a statement.
Sood helped hundreds of migrant workers, who were stranded during the lockdown in different states far from their native places, return to their villages and towns by arranging transport for them.
Sood also worked closely with SpiceJet and other airlines to help repatriate thousands of stranded Indians who were stuck abroad. Thanks to his efforts, over 1500 Indian students in Kyrgyzstan and hundreds of Indian nationals stuck in Russia, Uzbekistan, Manila, Almaty and other countries were brought back to India.
He also mortgaged eight of his properties in Mumbai to raise Rs 10 crore to help the needy.
Sood has featured in popular films Jodhaa Akbar, Dabangg, Happy New Year and Simmba.
