Aligarh: Is everything fair in love? It may be a debatable proposition but for 38-year-old Sapna Devi of Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh, who eloped with her daughter’s fiancé about 10 days before the wedding, ‘love’ guided her actions. Sapna had hogged the limelight for all ‘wrong’ reasons last week for being the ‘runaway mother.’ Sapna and her lover, who would have been his son-in-law otherwise, surrendered at police station on Wednesday. And, Sapna has now finally broken her silence to explain why did she run away with Rahul. According to reports, a defiant Sapna said she was in love and she would live with Rahul.
The woman claimed she decided to come back only after police was involved into the matter. The woman has also alleged that her husband used to drink and beat her up. She was also apparently upset with her daughter, who used to allegedly fight with her frequently. “I will marry him and live with him (Rahul),” she repeated at the police station, as reported by NDTV.
Did the family have any clue about the affair?
Sapna and Rahul Kumar – a resident of the Dadon police station area – had fled on April 6. But this came as a shock to both the families who apparently had no clue about the affair. Jitendra Kumar, Sapna’s husband, had earlier said that his wife used to speak to Kumar for hours every day. However, Jitendra never doubted these conversations.
Sapna fled with cash, jewelry…what she said?
Sapna has denied her family’s allegations that she fled with lakhs of rupees and jewelry. “I was only carrying a mobile and Rs 200 with me when I left,” she told police, reports claimed.

Rahul Kumar, who reportedly had eloped with another woman from a different village few years back and had returned after two months, also explained his side of the story. According to a NDTV report, Rahul claimed that he agreed to elope with Sapna as she threatened to kill herself if he didn’t. “She told me that if I didn’t meet her at Aligarh bus stop, she would die. So, I went. We first went to Lucknow, and from there Muzaffarpur,” Rahul said, as quoted by NDTV. He also claimed that Sapna’s husband and her in-laws used to “torture” her. The couple had reportedly stayed in a hotel in Bihar together and had even reached Nepal border after leaving their homes.
Will Rahul marry Sapna? What’s his family’s wish?
According to reports, when Rahul was asked if he would marry Sapna, he was apparently caught in a dilemma. At first, he reportedly replied by saying “there’s nothing like that.” However, after a brief silence, he nodded saying he would do so. But little is known about his family’s wish or opinion. There are reports in the media that Rahul may have been disowned by his father and deprived from his family property. On the other hand, Sapna’s family has reportedly decided not to take her back and allow her into their home. They have also demanded Sapna to return the cash and jewellery that they alleged she had taken away.
