New Delhi: Renowned Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair’s son Zohran Mamdani made history by bagging a seat in the New York state assembly. He was elected unopposed and will be the first south Asian to represent New York’s 36th Assembly District in Astoria.
“It’s official: we won. I’m going to Albany to fight to tax the rich, heal the sick, house the poor & build a socialist New York. But I can’t do it alone. To win socialism, we’ll need a mass movement of the multiracial working class as well. So let’s build one. Join @nycDSA,” tweeted 29-year-old Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist.
“Next year @nycDSA will be working to help us tax the wealthiest New Yorkers, pass universal rent control & stop construction of a fracked gas power plant in Astoria. Alone, we’re just people. But together, we can be a mass movement,” added Mamdani.
The son of Mira and Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani, Zohran is a housing counsellor and a rapper. Under the stage name of Mr Cardamom, Zohran has released several hip-hop songs, of which ‘Nani’ became extremely popular in 2019.
