New York: The world watched with rapt attention as Israel and the US launched deadly airstrikes on Tehran on Saturday, killing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.
They also discussed and dissected the operations, as well as Iran’s retaliatory strikes on multiple landmark sites in several Middle East cities.
So much so that Saturday saw the highest traffic on the social media platform X.
Billionaire Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and head of X Corp, declared on Sunday that the X platform witnessed a record single-day usage on February 28.
Musk took to X and shared a post from Nikita Bier, the company’s Product Manager who claimed that the day represented the highest traffic recorded in the platform’s history.
Responding to Bier’s post saying, “Today was the biggest day on X in history,” Musk wrote, “Highest usage of X ever.”
According to Musk, the previous record for X usage was on July 15, 2024, when 417 billion global user-seconds were recorded — exceeding past numbers of 76 billion user seconds.
The July 15, 2024 surge in X usage was a combination of several events — Donald Trump selecting J D Vance as his running mate for in US Presidential election at the Republican National Convention just two days after surviving an assassination attempt; Israel launching a major attack in Gaza in which over 90 people were killed; and in Bangladesh, a severe crackdown during student-led quota protests against Sheikh Hasina government.
February 28, 2026, however, was solely about planned missile strikes targeting Khamenei and his leadership.
