Use of Bhagavad Gita In Sex Scene: ‘Oppenheimer Movie An Attack On Hinduism’
New Delhi: ‘Oppenheimer’, one of the two big-ticket Hollywood films released worldwide last weekend, has run into trouble in India.
Christopher Nolan’s latest venture is the much-hyped biopic of Robert Oppenheimer, known as the ‘father of the atomic bomb’, but the problem is over a sex scene.
Cillian Murphy, who plays Oppenheimer, is seen reading the Bhagavad Gita while having sex with female lead Florence Pugh.
That image has not gone down well in India, with some calling it an attack on Hinduism and ‘Save Culture Save India Foundation’ demanding an investigation on how Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) approved the scene.
“A scene in the movie shows a woman make a man read Bhagavad Gita aloud while getting over him and doing sexual intercourse… This should be investigated by I & B Ministry on an urgent basis and those involved should be severely punished,” stated Save Culture Save India Foundation’s press release.
“One is perplexed as to how the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) could approve the movie with this scene,” said Uday Mahurkar, Information Commissioner with Indian government.
‘Oppenheimer’ is the first Nolan-directed movie to have an R (restricted) rating, but India’s censor board gave the film a U/A rating after the studio cut some shots of the sex scene to reduce its length.
