Vaccine Will Not Be Enough To Stop Pandemic: WHO Chief

London: World Health Organization (WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Monday warned that a vaccine will not by itself stop the coronavirus pandemic and that it “will complement the other tools we have, not replace them”.

By tools, it can be inferred that he recommended masks, social distancing and hand-hygiene measures to continue.

The global pandemic has already claimed over 1.3 million lives.

Last Friday, a record high of 6,45,410 new cases were registered with most coming from Europe’s second wave.

Tedros also said that vaccines will initially be restricted to “health workers, older people and other at-risk populations (to) be prioritized. That will hopefully reduce the number of deaths and enable the health systems to cope.”
