Jammu: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the victims’ kin and Rs 50,000 each to those injured in the stampede at the Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan in Katra. The compensation will be given from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
Jammu and Kashmir L-G Manoj Sinha also announced ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the kin of the victims. He also announced Rs 2 lakh for the injured.
Twelve pilgrims were killed and at least 13 injured in the stampede.
“The incident occurred around 2:45 am, and as per initial reports, an argument broke out which resulted in people pushing each other, followed by a stampede,” ANI quoted J&K DGP Dilbagh Singh as saying.
Dr Gopal Dutt, Block Medical Officer, Community Health Centre, said the casualties were from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and one from J&K.
The Vaishno Devi yatra resumed later.
