Chennai: Tamil Nadu, which had witnessed a binary politics dominated by DMK and AIADMK for years, may see a third player taking the lead this time, as the counting for state Assembly polls is underway.

It is now an intense three-cornered contest involving the ruling DMK-led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, its main rival AIADMK, which is in alliance with the BJP, and the new entrant – actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

Latest trends, as of 11 am on Monday, show Vijay’s TVK overtaking DMK in the state. According to the official website of Election Commission of India, TVK is leading in 104 out of the state’s 234 seats.

The AIADMK is leading in 66 seats, while the DMK is ahead in 39 seats.

Vijay is leading from both the Perambur and Tiruchirappalli (East) constituencies. In the Perambur seat, he is leading by a margin of more than 2,990 votes. He is also ahead by a margin of more than 3,299 in Tiruchirappalli (East), after early rounds of counting.

Chief Minister MK Stalin is currently trailing from his stronghold, the Kolathur seat, after the initial rounds of counting. Stalin is trailing Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s VS Babu by over 1,200 votes, as of 11 am.

Meanwhile, supporters of DMK expressed their anger by uprooting some party banners and poles at their office in Chennai, reported NDTV. Some wooden poles with posters of the party led by MK Stalin were found fallen on the ground.
