Chennai: Tamil actor-politician Vijay (actor) has claimed that news about his divorce was deliberately leaked just weeks before the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections to damage his political prospects.
According to reports, Vijay suggested that his political opponents timed the circulation of his personal issues to coincide with the poll campaign, alleging a calculated attempt to tarnish his image.
Addressing party members and supporters, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief said that not only his divorce but also “false rumours” about his associates were spread as part of a broader smear campaign. He indicated that such developments were meant to distract voters and weaken his party’s growing influence ahead of the polls.
Vijay has been in the news after reports emerged that his wife, Sangeeta Sornalingam, filed for divorce after over two decades of marriage.
Speculation around the separation intensified following his public appearances with actor Trisha Krishnan, which triggered rumours about their relationship—claims that have remained the subject of media attention and social media debate.
Vijay formally entered politics with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, and is preparing to contest the 2026 state elections. His recent remarks reflect the increasingly sharp political atmosphere in the state, with the actor positioning himself as a challenger to established parties.
While Vijay did not name specific rivals, he maintained that he remains focused on his political.
