Chennai: Vijay’s wife Sangeeta Sornalingam has filed a petition seeking separation after more than 25 years of marriage with the actor-turned-politician.
Photos of Vijay attending a wedding reception with rumoured girlfriend, actress Trisha Krishnan, went viral recently.
According to an ANI report, the court documents show that Sangeeta initiated legal proceedings recently before the District Court in Chengalpattu, seeking dissolution of her marriage and interim residential rights.
In the petition, Sangeeta is listed as the petitioner, while Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, popularly known as Vijay in the Tamil film industry, has been named as the respondent.
The plea has been filed under Sections 27(1)(a), (b), and (d) of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, seeking legal dissolution of their marriage, which was solemnised on August 25, 1999.
The filing also mentions that the couple had earlier registered their marriage in the United Kingdom in 1998 before holding a ceremonial wedding in Chennai the following year.
Along with the divorce petition, Sangeeta has requested an interim order allowing her to continue residing at the couple’s matrimonial home on Casuarina Drive in Chennai until the case is resolved.
The petition states that she is a British citizen, and currently does not have another residence in India.
Legal documents further claim that Sangeeta discovered in April 2021 that Vijay was allegedly involved in an “adulterous relationship” with an actress, which she says led to emotional distress and breakdown of trust in their marriage.
The petition also alleges that Vijay continued to publicly associate with the actress and travel with her overseas, causing embarrassment and emotional hardship for Sangeeta and their children.
The affidavit and petition were signed by Sangeeta and her counsel, M/s Rathina Asohan, on February 22, 2026.
The Chengalpattu court has reportedly issued a notice to Vijay, directing him to appear in the matter.
Vijay and Sangeeta, who got married in India in August 1999, have two children, Jason Sanjay and Divya Shasha.
